Reverie Garden

Jessica Dunn & Landon Caldwell

Commissioned by Newfields (Indianapolis Museum of Art)

Debuted April 7th, 2023

Reverie Garden, by Jessica Dunn and Landon Caldwell, is an immersive audio-visual dreamscape inspired by the natural world, where viewers are invited to explore THE LUME to discover delights for the senses. Dunn led the visual component, creating enchanting environments inspired by memories from her frequent hikes in Indiana parks. Combining painting and animation techniques, she developed numerous habitats showcasing native biodiversity from surreal perspectives. Caldwell composed the audio drawing on the sounds of nature, running them through a hypnagogic filter, and summoning a contemplative sonic environment. Reverie Garden provides a space where viewers can play, meditate, and reflect.

Reverie Garden Video Tour

Video cannot quite capture the full in-person immersive experience, but here is a short preview of part of the space. Below is a blurb about the LUME itself from Newfields.

THE LUME Indianapolis is a multisensory exhibit which occupies the fourth floor of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. It features nearly 150 state-of-the-art digital projectors that transform two-dimensional paintings into a three-dimensional world that museum visitors can explore while walking through 30,000 square feet of immersive galleries. THE LUME Indianapolis has 60 minutes of digital content that runs continuously and simultaneously in all the digital galleries.

This is not a movie with a start and end, or something one would sit to watch from a single viewpoint, but rather a constant loop of imagery that is designed to be a walking experience, seeing the art up close and all around you. Visitors wander throughout the space, taking in the experience from every angle.
